The Truth About Peeling Leather: NOT Real Leather & What Big Box Brands Donβt Tell You
Many mass-produced furniture companiesβincluding West Elm, CB2, and othersβoften use what's called corrected grain leather, bonded leather, orΒ PU-coated split leatherΒ to cut costs. While it might look like genuine full grain real leather at first, itβs far from it.
β Corrected Grain or "Milled" Leather
This leather is heavily sanded and coated to remove imperfections, then embossed with an artificial grain pattern to mimic full grain real leather. The surface is often sealed with a plastic-like finish (polyurethane or acrylic), which gives it a uniform look but blocks breathability. Over time, this finish can crack, peel, or flakeβespecially in dry or high-use environments.
β Bonded Leather
This is not real leather. Itβs made from leather scraps mixedΒ withΒ plastics and adhesives , then rolled out into sheets and coated to look like the real thing. Itβs cheaper, but it degrades quickly and can start peeling in as little as a year.
Why We Donβt Use It
We never use bonded, faux, or corrected leathersβunless clients demand it. Every H|F piece is crafted from genuine full grain or top grain real leather hides, each selected by handΒ and made toΒ last for decades, not months. When our leather wears, it ages beautifullyβit doesn't fall apart.
Full Grain vs. Top Grain: Whatβs the Difference?
If youβve ever shopped for real leather furniture, youβve likely seen terms like βfull grainβ or βtop grain.β While they may sound similar, the difference is significantβand it shows in both durability and aesthetic integrity.
Full Grain "Real Leather"
This is the highest quality real leather available, taken from the very top layer of the hide. It retains the natural grain, markings, and imperfections that give each piece a rich, lived-in texture.Β That kind of Ralph Lauren vibe we all love and strive for.Β Β Full grain real leather develops a patina over time, deepening in character the more itβs usedβideal for clients who love timeless, rugged luxury.
At H|F Atelier, our signature full grain real leather is often used in bespoke headboards, leather banquettes, and statement ottomans. No two are alike. Itβs the leather you can feelβsoft yet structured, organic yet refined.
Top Grain Leather
Top grain is sanded and refinished to remove natural imperfections. While still high quality, it loses some of the hideβs unique surface texture in exchange for a more uniform appearance. We use top grain leathers selectively, especially when a sleek, minimal aesthetic is desired for hospitality-grade seating or contemporary interiors.
Why Hand-Selection Matters
Unlike most furniture manufacturers who order pre-cut or factory-treated leathers in bulk, we hand-inspect every real leather hide before it touches our workroom floor. We assess:
Real Leather grain + consistency
Thickness and flexibility
Natural stretch and durability
Color depth and unique surface markings
This process ensures that every piece of real leather furniture from HUNTEDFOX & our Custom Design House- H|F Atelier is truly one-of-a-kindβwith no fillers, no bonded leather, and no surprises.
